MT MERU SUMMIT & SAFARI
ABOUT THIS TRIP
Mount Meru at 4,566 metres is one of Africa's most rewarding and underrated high-altitude climbs. Rising inside Arusha National Park, this climb Mount Meru Tanzania experience offers a quieter, wilder alternative to Kilimanjaro.
Our Mount Meru trek begins differently, with a safari and wilderness camping experience inside the park before the climb. Trek through forest, moorland, and along the dramatic crater rim, gaining height progressively for proper acclimatisation.
Armed park rangers accompany the lower slopes due to free-roaming wildlife, adding to the remote nature of this Mount Meru expedition. Summit night begins around midnight, reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise with sweeping views across the Meru crater and Mount Kilimanjaro beyond.
This is a true Tanzania climbing expedition. Wild. Remote. Expertly led.
At Wild Axis Expeditions, we don't just guide climbs. We design experiences built for resilience, authenticity, and success.

DIFFICULTY RATING
This expedition is graded Level 3 – Challenging and is suited to those with good physical fitness and a resilient mindset.
You should be comfortable with:
• 5–7 hours of trekking per day
• Sustained elevation gain over multiple days (up to 4,566 m)
• A long summit night ascent
• Steep terrain and exposed crater rim sections
• Cold temperatures at altitude
The route is non-technical. Prior to summit day, we follow a progressive acclimatisation plan and maintain steady pacing throughout.
Preparation, discipline, and consistency remain essential.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Mount Meru suitable for beginners?
Yes. Mount Meru is an excellent first high-altitude mountain for anyone with a good level of fitness. No previous mountaineering experience is required, making it an ideal introduction to trekking at altitude.
How difficult is Mount Meru?
Mount Meru is physically demanding due to the altitude and consecutive days of hiking, but it is not a technical climb. Most trekkers find the challenge comes from the elevation gain rather than the terrain itself.
Why choose Mount Meru instead of Kilimanjaro?
Mount Meru offers a more remote and wilderness-focused experience than Kilimanjaro. The trails are quieter, wildlife encounters are common and the mountain provides spectacular views of Kilimanjaro from the summit. It is one of Africa’s most underrated trekking peaks.
Why choose Wild Axis Expeditions?
We’ve designed this itinerary to be far more than just a mountain trek. Our goal is to fully immerse you in the landscapes, wildlife and adventure of northern Tanzania.
Before the climb, you’ll spend a day exploring Arusha National Park in our purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle, giving you the opportunity to experience Tanzania’s incredible wildlife before heading into the mountains. We’ll then spend a night camping in the bush beneath the stars before beginning our ascent of Mount Meru. By combining safari, wilderness camping and one of Africa’s most underrated trekking peaks into a single journey, we’ve created a genuine expedition experience that allows you to explore far more than just the summit.
Will we see wildlife during the trek?
Very likely. One of the things that makes Mount Meru so unique is that the trek begins within Arusha National Park, meaning the adventure starts long before you reach the mountain slopes. It is common to encounter giraffes, buffalo, zebras, warthogs, bushbuck, colobus monkeys, baboons and a variety of birdlife during the lower sections of the climb.
Depending on the season, you may also see flamingos on the Momella Lakes, one of the park’s most iconic sights. Unlike most mountain treks, you’ll often find yourself hiking through open savannah and forest with wildlife visible around you, making Mount Meru one of the most unique trekking experiences in Africa.
Why are armed rangers required?
Unlike most trekking destinations, Mount Meru passes through an active wildlife area. All groups are accompanied by armed park rangers for safety due to the presence of buffalo and other large animals within the national park.
Is Mount Meru good for acclimatisation?
Absolutely. Mount Meru reaches 4,566m and provides an excellent opportunity to adapt to altitude. Many climbers use Meru as preparation for Kilimanjaro, but it is also a fantastic standalone expedition in its own right.
What accommodation is included?
Accommodation includes comfortable hotel accommodation in Arusha, a night of wilderness camping in Arusha National Park and mountain huts during the trekking phase. Unlike Kilimanjaro, there is no camping on Mount Meru itself, with all nights on the mountain spent in established huts.
What is the food like on the expedition?
Our mountain team prepares fresh meals throughout the expedition, designed to keep you fuelled during long days on the trail. Meals typically include a mixture of local and international dishes, with vegetarian, vegan and most dietary requirements catered for with advance notice.
Can I join as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. Many of our clients join alone. Our small group sizes and shared adventure create a friendly atmosphere, and groups often finish the expedition as friends.
