THE ULTIMATE WINTER TREK: NORTH AFRICA’S HIGHEST PEAK
Trek through snow-dusted valleys, climb above the clouds, and watch the sun rise from North Africa's highest point on this Mount Toubkal guided climb.
ABOUT THIS TRIP
This is not the typical express Toubkal climb. Our Mount Toubkal winter climb is designed around proper acclimatisation, safety, and realistic summit success.
Rather than heading straight to the refuge, we begin with a progressive ascent to Tizi M'zzik Pass (2480 m), building adaptation before descending to our mountain guesthouse in Ait Souka. This extra elevation gain supports adjustment before we commit higher.
The following day, we move steadily up the Mizane Valley toward the Toubkal Refuge (3200 m), incorporating structured winter skills preparation along the way.
Summit day begins before dawn, climbing under starlight toward the 4,167 metre peak on one of the most rewarding Atlas Mountains trekking Morocco routes available. Every step is guided by an experienced, safety-focused team applying sound mountain judgement and pacing throughout.
At Wild Axis Expeditions, we don't just guide climbs — we design experiences built for resilience, authenticity, and success.

DIFFICULTY RATING
This expedition is graded Level 4 – Demanding and is suited to those with good physical fitness and a resilient mindset.
You should be comfortable with:
• 5–8 hours of trekking per day
• Sustained elevation gain at altitude (up to 4167 m)
• Consecutive demanding days in a winter mountain environment
• Cold temperatures and variable mountain conditions
The route is non-technical. Prior to summit day, we conduct a structured winter skills session covering safe movement in crampons and ice axe handling on snow.
Preparation, discipline, and steady pacing remain essential throughout.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this expedition suitable for beginners?
Yes. While winter conditions make Mount Toubkal more challenging than in summer, no previous winter mountaineering experience is required. This expedition is suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness who is looking to gain experience travelling in an alpine mountain environment. Our experienced guides will provide instruction and support throughout the expedition, making it an excellent introduction to winter mountaineering.
How difficult is a winter ascent of Mount Toubkal?
A winter ascent of Mount Toubkal is significantly more challenging than the summer route. Snow, ice, cold temperatures and the altitude all add to the difficulty. However, the route remains non-technical in normal conditions and is achievable for fit and determined participants.
Why is your itinerary good for acclimatisation?
Unlike many standard winter itineraries, we don’t head straight to the refuge on day one. Instead, we spend our first day trekking over the Tizi n’Mzik Pass before descending to our mountain lodge in Ait Souka. This follows the well-established mountaineering principle of “climb high, sleep low”, giving your body an initial exposure to altitude while allowing it to recover overnight at a lower elevation. The following day we ascend to the Toubkal Refuge at approximately 3,200m before our summit attempt. This more gradual approach helps many trekkers feel stronger and more comfortable on summit day while improving their overall mountain experience.
Why choose Wild Axis Expeditions?
Our local team has guided over 350 successful ascents of Mount Toubkal and has extensive experience operating in winter conditions. Unlike many operators that simply use the refuge as a base for a summit attempt, our expedition includes practical winter skills instruction, small group sizes and experienced local guides who know the mountain and its changing conditions intimately. Our goal is not only to help you reach the summit, but also to leave with new skills and confidence in a winter mountain environment.
Will we still attempt the summit if conditions are challenging?
Yes. We are committed to giving every client the best possible opportunity of reaching the summit. Winter mountain conditions can be unpredictable, and while some budget operators may choose to turn groups around at the first sign of challenging weather, we carefully assess conditions throughout the expedition and only make the decision to abandon a summit attempt when it is genuinely unsafe to continue. Our priority is always to balance safety with giving clients the greatest possible chance of success. This is where experience on the mountain matters, knowing when conditions are challenging but manageable, and when they genuinely present an unacceptable risk.
Will I need crampons and an ice axe?
Yes. Winter conditions require the use of crampons and an ice axe. We provide crampons, ice axes and helmets as part of the expedition, so there is no need to purchase specialist equipment beforehand.
What winter skills will I learn?
Winter skills training is included as part of the expedition. Throughout the trip, you’ll learn the fundamentals of winter mountain travel, including crampon techniques, ice axe use, movement on snow and ice, and essential mountain safety skills. This makes the expedition an excellent introduction to winter mountaineering while helping to build your confidence in a winter mountain environment.
What accommodation is included?
Accommodation includes two nights in a boutique riad in Marrakech, one night in our mountain lodge in Ait Souka and one night in the Toubkal Refuge, located at approximately 3,200m in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. This combination provides both comfort before and after the climb, while allowing us to maximise our time high in the mountains.
What is the food like on the expedition?
Our dedicated expedition cook accompanies the team throughout the mountain phase, preparing fresh meals each day. Meals are designed to keep you fuelled for long days in the mountains and typically include traditional Moroccan dishes such as tagines, couscous, grilled meats, fresh bread, soups, salads, fruit and snacks. Vegetarian, vegan, and most dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice.
Can I join as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. Many of our clients join alone. Our small group sizes and shared adventure create a friendly atmosphere, and groups often finish the expedition as friends.
