MOUNT KILIMANJARO - MACHAME ROUTE
ABOUT THIS TRIP
Our Machame Route expedition is built around steady progression through some of the most varied terrain on the mountain, starting in dense rainforest before breaking out onto open ridgelines, high moorland and the upper alpine slopes. It’s a more direct line than Lemosho, with a stronger sense of forward movement, but still structured to give your body time to adapt through key points like Lava Tower and the Barranco Valley, following the climb high, sleep low approach.
As the route develops, the Barranco Wall becomes a defining moment, a hands-on scramble that adds a different edge to the climb before we move onto the high southern slopes. Summit night is tough but controlled, climbing under starlight to Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
The descent takes you back through the full range of environments, from alpine desert to rainforest, giving a complete journey of the mountain. Before the climb, we include a short acclimatisation hike to Materuni Waterfall to ease you in.
This is Kilimanjaro done properly, well paced, fully supported, and built for those who want a more physical, varied route to the summit.

DIFFICULTY RATING
This expedition is graded Level 4 – Demanding and is suited to those with good physical fitness and a resilient mindset. The Machame Route follows a more direct line on the mountain, making it a physically engaging ascent with a stronger sense of continuous progression.
You should be comfortable with:
• 5–8 hours of trekking per day
• Sustained elevation gain at altitude (up to 5,895 m)
• Consecutive demanding days with limited recovery
• Short sections of hands-on scrambling, including the Barranco Wall
The route is non-technical, but altitude, terrain and consistency are the main challenges. Expect steep sections, changing mountain conditions, and a long overnight summit push in thin air.
Preparation, pacing and the ability to keep moving day after day remain essential throughout.

Day 2
ACCLIMATISATION HIKE: MATERUNI WATERFALL
A gentle but purposeful acclimatisation day on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, drive to Materuni Village for a guided walk through local farmland and forest before hiking to the impressive Materuni Waterfall. This light activity helps stimulate acclimatisation while offering cultural insight before heading higher.
🥾 Trekking: 2–3 hrs 📈Ascent: +200 m 📉Descent: –200 m
🏠 Overnight: Expedition Lodge in Moshi

Day 3
MACHAME GATE → MACHAME CAMP
The expedition begins. After registration at Machame Gate, we step onto the trail and enter dense equatorial rainforest alive with bird calls, towering trees and tangled moss-covered branches.
The climb is steady and rhythmic, gaining altitude as the air cools and the forest begins to thin. By late afternoon we arrive at Machame Camp, our first night on the mountain beneath the towering slopes of Kilimanjaro.
🥾 Trekking: 5–7 hrs 📈 Ascent: +1,200 m 📉 Descent: 0 m
⛺ Overnight: Machame Camp (3,000 m)

Day 4
MACHAME CAMP → SHIRA CAMP
Leaving the forest behind, the landscape transforms dramatically into open moorland dotted with giant heather and volcanic rock. The views widen across the Shira Plateau — one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking geological features.
As altitude increases, the pace slows and breathing deepens. The air is thinner now, and the true scale of the mountain begins to reveal itself.
🥾 Trekking: 5–6 hrs 📈 Ascent: +840 m 📉 Descent: 0 m
⛺ Overnight: Shira Camp (3,840 m)

Day 5
SHIRA CAMP → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO CAMP
One of the most important acclimatisation days of the expedition. We climb steadily into the stark alpine desert toward Lava Tower, where lunch is taken high on the mountain.
After reaching our highest point so far, we descend into the sheltered Barranco Valley beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall - one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic landscapes. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves acclimatisation.
🥾 Trekking: 6–7 hrs 📈 Ascent: +790 m 📉 Descent: −670 m
⛺ Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Day 6
BARRANCO CAMP → KARANGA CAMP
The day begins with the exhilarating scramble up the Barranco Wall, a hands-on but non-technical climb that rewards effort with spectacular panoramic views.
Beyond the wall, the route undulates across ridges and valleys shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity. The landscape feels remote, high, and truly alpine.
🥾Trekking: 4–5 hrs 📈 Ascent: +200 m 📉 Descent: −125 m
⛺Overnight: Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

Day 7
KARANGA CAMP → BARAFU CAMP
A shorter but critical day as we move into the harsh alpine zone of Barafu Camp — our summit base. The terrain is stark, windswept and dramatic, with glaciers visible high above.
After an early dinner, your guide briefs you for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally for the most demanding and rewarding stage of the expedition.
🕒 Trekking: 3–4 hrs 📈 Ascent: +640 m 📉 Descent: 0 m
⛺ Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

Day 8
SUMMIT DAY | BARAFU → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP
Around midnight we begin the summit push under a sky full of stars. The climb is slow, steady and determined as we ascend toward Stella Point and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.
At sunrise, the glaciers glow gold and the vast plains of Tanzania stretch far below. After celebrating on the summit, we descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
An unforgettable and physically demanding day.
🥾 Trekking: 10–14 hrs 📈 Ascent: +1,222 m 📉 Descent: −2,795 m
⛺ Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Day 9
MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE
A final descent through lush rainforest, where warmer air and thick vegetation signal our return to lower elevations. At Mweka Gate, summit certificates are awarded - official recognition of your achievement.
Transfer back to the hotel for a hot shower, celebration meal, and well-earned rest.
🥾 Trekking: 3–4 hrs 📈 Ascent: 0 m 📉 Descent: −1,460 m

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Kilimanjaro suitable for beginners?
Yes. No previous mountaineering experience is required to climb Kilimanjaro. With a good level of fitness, determination and the right preparation, many first-time trekkers successfully reach the summit each year.
Why choose the Machame Route?
Often referred to as the “Whisky Route”, Machame is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic routes. It offers incredible variety, taking you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and high-altitude glacial landscapes as you make your way towards the summit.
The route also follows a strong acclimatisation profile, including the important “climb high, sleep low” principle, which contributes to its excellent summit success rates. One of the highlights of the climb is the.........
