MONTENEGRO: RIVERS & RIDGES

This is not a standard trekking or kayaking holiday. Durmitor: Rivers & Ridges Expedition is a multi-discipline journey through one of Europe’s wildest national parks, designed for those who want to move deeply through a landscape rather than simply visit it.

ABOUT THIS TRIP

This is not a standard trekking or kayaking holiday. Durmitor: Rivers & Ridges Expedition is a multi-discipline journey through one of Europe’s wildest national parks, designed for those who want to move deeply through a landscape rather than simply visit it.

Led by experienced expedition leaders and supported by a professional local team, this route combines remote packrafting, high mountain trekking, and wild riverbank camping into a single, coherent expedition. The itinerary is carefully structured to balance physical challenge with recovery, allowing you to perform well across multiple days while fully absorbing the scale and solitude of Durmitor National Park.

The journey begins quietly, descending into the rarely visited Komarnica River canyon before packrafting through narrow limestone gorges to Piva Lake. From there, the focus shifts upward hiking into the heart of Durmitor to climb Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), the highest peak in the massif. This demanding alpine ascent delivers expansive views across the Dinaric Alps and sets the tone for the expedition’s ridge-and-river character.

The final phase follows the legendary Tara River Canyon, paddling deeper each day into Europe’s deepest gorge. Over several days, we travel by packraft through increasingly remote sections of the canyon, camping overnight on the riverbanks beneath towering limestone walls. Days are shaped by the rhythm of the river paddling, swimming, exploring side canyons, and disconnecting completely from roads, crowds, and routine.

Throughout the expedition, safety, pacing, and decision-making are prioritised. This is real adventure, delivered with intention well planned, expertly guided, and immersive from start to finish.

DIFFICULTY RATING

At Wild Axis Expeditions, we don’t just link activities together. We design journeys that reward commitment, resilience, and curiosity — and this expedition is a true expression of that philosophy.

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN PODGORICA → BREZNA VILLAGE

Guests are met on arrival at Podgorica Airport and transferred north into the Montenegrin highlands. The drive steadily leaves the lowlands behind, climbing into quieter, more remote terrain.

By late afternoon we arrive in Brezna, a small mountain village surrounded by open meadows and forested hills. Time to settle in, stretch the legs after travel, and ease into expedition mode.

Dinner and overnight in Brezna Woodland Bungalows

Day 2

KOMARNICA RIVER PACKRAFTING

After breakfast, a short transfer leads to the starting point above the Komarnica River canyon. The day begins with an approximately one-hour hike descending into the canyon, gradually revealing the river below.

At river level, there is time to rest, refuel, and prepare packrafting equipment. We then paddle a 12–14 km stretch of mostly Class II water, moving through a narrow, remote canyon that feels quiet and isolated—very different in character to the wider Tara River.

The packrafting section ends where the Komarnica flows into Piva Lake. From here, the group is collected by boat and transferred across the lake to the exit point, followed by a road transfer to Žabljak.

Day 3

ASCENT OF BOBOTOV KUK (2,523 M)

An early start for one of the expedition’s defining days. After breakfast, we transfer to Dobri Do, the starting point for the ascent of Bobotov Kuk—the highest peak in the Durmitor massif.

This is a demanding full-day mountain hike, crossing open alpine terrain, rocky ascents, and exposed sections that reward steady movement and good fitness. As height is gained, expansive views open across Durmitor and deep into Montenegro’s mountain interior.

From the 2,523 m summit, the reward is a sweeping 360-degree panorama across peaks, plateaus, and deep valleys. Descent is via the same route or a circular option depending on conditions. Return to Žabljak in the late afternoon.

Dinner and overnight in Žabljak at Zlatni Bar GH

Day 4

TARA RIVER CANYON: EXPEDITION BEGINS

The packrafting expedition on the Tara River Canyon begins. After a short transfer to the river, the group launches into the upper sections of the Tara.

The day is spent paddling through increasingly dramatic scenery, with time for swimming, short explorations along the riverbanks, and absorbing the scale of Europe’s deepest canyon. By afternoon, we reach the first remote riverside campsite.

Camp setup, dinner, and overnight by the river.

Day 5

TARA CANYON: DEEP WILDERNESS SECTIONS

A full day packrafting deeper into the Tara Canyon, where towering limestone walls rise above the river and the sense of remoteness intensifies. This section follows one of the most scenic and wild stretches of the canyon, close to the Bosnia–Montenegro border.

There are opportunities throughout the day to stop at waterfalls, swim, and take in the canyon atmosphere. A second riverside campsite is established for the night.

Dinner and overnight by the river.

Day 6

FINAL TARA SECTION → PLUŽINE

The final packrafting section continues downstream toward Šćepan Polje, where the Tara meets the Piva River. After reaching the take-out point, the river expedition comes to an end.

From here, the group transfers by road to Plužine, set high above the turquoise waters of Piva Lake. The evening is relaxed, with time to explore the town or simply rest after consecutive expedition days.

Overnight in Plužine at Zvono GH
