MONTENEGRO: RIVERS & RIDGES
This is not a standard trekking or kayaking holiday. Montenegro: Rivers & Ridges Expedition is a multi-discipline journey through one of Europe’s wildest national parks, designed for those who want to move deeply through a landscape rather than simply visit it.
ABOUT THIS TRIP
After arrival in the Montenegrin highlands, the journey opens with packrafting on the Komarnica River, a quiet, narrow canyon that sets the tone for the Montenegro packrafting expedition ahead. We then shift to the mountains for the ascent of Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 metres, the highest peak in Durmitor National Park, before committing to the deeper sections of the Tara River Canyon.
Over several days, we paddle progressively downstream through limestone gorges and increasingly remote wilderness, establishing riverside camps and moving beyond the reach of day rafting traffic. This is a genuine Montenegro wilderness adventure far removed from packaged tourism.
The result is a deliberate ridge-and-river progression through Durmitor National Park, designed for those who want immersion rather than observation and movement through landscape rather than simply visiting it.

DIFFICULTY RATING
Level 2 to 3, Moderate. This guided mountain expedition is designed for those with a reasonable level of fitness and comfort moving across varied terrain.
Participants can expect 4 to 7 hours of activity per day, mountain trekking with steady ascent and descent, a summit day to 2,523 metres, multi-day packrafting on Class II to III rapids, and wild camping in remote sections.
You carry a daypack while shared equipment is transported or rafted. No prior packrafting experience on the Durmitor rivers is required. A good base level of fitness and confidence in the outdoors will allow you to enjoy the full progression of this small group expedition.
ITINERARY

Day 1
ARRIVAL IN PODGORICA → BREZNA VILLAGE
Guests are met on arrival at Podgorica Airport and transferred north into the Montenegrin highlands. The drive steadily leaves the lowlands behind, climbing into quieter, more remote terrain.
By late afternoon we arrive in Brezna, a small mountain village surrounded by open meadows and forested hills. Time to settle in, stretch the legs after travel, and ease into expedition mode.
✈️ Arrive: Podgorica Airport (TGD)
🚙 Overland: 2hrs
🏠 Overnight: Brezna Woodland Bungalows

Day 2
KOMARNICA RIVER PACKRAFTING
After breakfast, a short transfer leads to the starting point above the Komarnica River canyon. The day begins with an approximately one-hour hike descending into the canyon, gradually revealing the river below.
At river level, there is time to rest, refuel, and prepare packrafting equipment. We then paddle a 12 to 14 kilometre stretch of mostly Class II water, moving through a narrow, remote canyon. This is one of the most rewarding packrafting experiences the Balkans offers, and a defining element of any small group expedition into this region.
The packrafting section ends where the Komarnica flows into Piva Lake. From here, the group is collected by boat and transferred across the lake to the exit point, followed by a road transfer to Zabljak.
Trekking 1 hour. Descent 200 metres. Paddling 4 hours. Overnight at Mountain Guesthouse in Zabljak.
🥾 Trekking: 1 hr 📉 Descent: –200m
🛶 Paddling: 4hrs

Day 3
ASCENT OF BOBOTOV KUK (2,523 M)
An early start for one of the expedition's defining days. After breakfast, we transfer to Dobri Do, the starting point for the ascent of Bobotov Kuk, the highest peak in the Durmitor massif and a centrepiece of any Montenegro trekking and rafting itinerary.
This is a demanding full-day mountain hike crossing open alpine terrain, rocky ascents, and exposed sections that reward steady movement and good fitness. As height is gained, expansive views open across Durmitor and deep into Montenegro's mountain interior.
From the 2,523 metre summit, the reward is a sweeping 360-degree panorama across peaks, plateaus, and deep valleys. Descent is via the same route or a circular option depending on conditions, with return to Zabljak in the late afternoon.
Trekking 7 hours. Ascent 850 metres. Descent 850 metres. Overnight at Mountain Guesthouse in Zabljak.
🥾 Trekking: 7 hrs
📈 Ascent: +850m 📉 Descent: –850m

Day 4
TARA RIVER CANYON: EXPEDITION BEGINS
The Tara River expedition phase begins. After a short transfer to the river, we launch into the upper sections of the canyon, one of the most spectacular settings for remote expedition travel in Europe.
The day is spent moving steadily downstream through narrowing limestone walls and deep turquoise water. As the gorge closes in, the sense of scale increases and road access disappears. By late afternoon, we establish our first remote riverside camp.
Paddling 4 to 5 hours. Overnight at Riverside Wild Camp.
🛶 Paddling: 4-5hrs
🏕️ Overnight: Riverside Wild Camp

Day 5
TARA CANYON: DEEP WILDERNESS SECTIONS
A full day deeper into the Tara Canyon on this Montenegro rafting expedition. The gorge narrows and the limestone walls rise higher as we move further from access points and settlements.
This section follows one of the wildest stretches of the canyon, close to the Bosnia and Montenegro border. The river maintains a steady flow, with time to manage features, regroup, and move efficiently as a team. By afternoon we establish our second remote riverside camp, fully immersed in the canyon environment.
Paddling 5 to 6 hours. Overnight at Riverside Wild Camp.
🛶 Paddling: 5-6hrs

Day 6
FINAL TARA SECTION → PLUŽINE
The final Durmitor packrafting section continues downstream toward Scepan Polje, where the Tara meets the Piva River. After reaching the take-out point, the river expedition comes to an end.
From here, the group transfers by road to Pluzine, set high above the turquoise waters of Piva Lake. The evening is relaxed, with time to explore the town or simply rest after consecutive expedition days.
Paddling 5 to 6 hours. Overland transfer 1 hour. Overnight in Pluzine.
🛶 Paddling: 5-6hrs
🚙 Overland: 1hr
🏠 Overnight: Plužine

Day 7
RETURN TO PODGORICA
Free time in the morning to explore Plužine, walk along Piva Lake, or simply enjoy a slow start after consecutive expedition days.
Late morning, we depart the mountains and begin the transfer south toward Podgorica. The journey out offers a final perspective on the terrain that has shaped the week, from deep river canyons to high Durmitor ridgelines.
Arrival at Podgorica Airport for onward travel.
