ATLAS TO SAHARA EXPEDITION
Ascend the ancient volcano of Mt Siroua, then navigate the shifting dunes by 4WD on an expedition across Morocco’s wild soul.
ABOUT THIS TRIP
This is not a standard Morocco itinerary. It follows the Draa Valley Traverse, linking two completely different landscapes in one continuous push south.
Beginning in the Anti-Atlas, quiet Berber valleys rise into the volcanic ridgelines of Jebel Siroua at 3,304m, remote and crowd-free, before descending through open plains as the terrain slowly dries and flattens into desert. From there we travel by 4WD into the dunes of Chegaga, far from the main tourist routes, spending nights under clear desert skies with full support crew.
Most Morocco trips focus on either the mountains or the desert. This one connects both properly, without rushing the transition. A steady progression from summit to sand, starting in Agadir and finishing in Marrakesh.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is this expedition different from a standard Sahara tour?
This is not your standard Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert tour sold through large online travel platforms. We’ve built this expedition from the ground up to create a genuine adventure through some of Morocco’s most remote and least-visited landscapes.
Rather than spending hours in a vehicle travelling between tourist hotspots, you’ll trek through the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains, cross remote sections of the Draa Valley and experience the vastness of the Sahara in a way that few visitors ever do. With experienced local guides, dedicated support staff and carefully planned logistics, we’ve created a safe and rewarding way to explore a side of Morocco that most travellers never see.
Is this expedition suitable for beginners?
Yes. No previous trekking, scrambling or expedition experience is required. This trip is designed for adventurous people with a reasonable level of fitness who want to experience remote Morocco beyond the usual tourist routes. Our experienced guides and support team will be with you throughout the journey
How difficult is the expedition?
This expedition involves several consecutive days of hiking through remote mountain and desert terrain. While most of the trekking is non-technical, participants should be comfortable walking for multiple hours each day on uneven ground.
Where conditions allow, we also attempt the summit of Jebel Siroua (3,304m). The final section involves a hands-on scramble up Siroua’s distinctive volcanic plug, requiring the use of both hands over rocky terrain. The reward is one of Morocco’s most unique summit experiences and spectacular views across the AntiAtlas Mountains.
Why choose Wild Axis Expeditions?
You won’t find this itinerary anywhere else. This is a Wild Axis Expeditions original, designed and built from the ground up to create a genuine journey through some of Morocco’s most remote and least-visited landscapes.
This isn’t a standard package tour or a route copied from another operator. It’s real exploration. From the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains and remote sections of the Draa Valley to the vast dunes of the Sahara, every stage of the expedition has been carefully crafted to deliver a true sense of adventure. With experienced local guides, dedicated support staff and small group sizes, we’ve created a unique expedition that takes you far beyond the tourist trail.
Why is Jebel Siroua special?
Jebel Siroua (3,304m) is the highest peak in the Anti-Atlas Mountains and one of Morocco ’s most overlooked mountain objectives. Unlike the well-known routes on Mount Toubkal, Siroua sees very few visitors and offers a genuine sense of exploration. Its distinctive volcanic summit, remote location and panoramic views make it one of Morocco’s most unique mountain experiences.
How remote is the expedition?
Very remote. Once we leave the main towns behind, we’ll spend several days travelling through areas that see very few international visitors. From isolated mountain villages to the vast open spaces of the Draa Valley and Sahara Desert, this expedition takes you far beyond Morocco’s typical tourist trail.
What support is provided during the trek?
This is a fully supported expedition led by an experienced local team, including guides, muleteers, drivers and our dedicated expedition cook. Throughout the journey, you’ll travel in comfortable off-road vehicles as we move between the Anti-Atlas Mountains, the remote Draa Valley and the vast dunes of the Sahara Desert.
Mules transport equipment during the trekking phase, allowing you to carry only a daypack, while our support team takes care of camp setup, meals and expedition logistics. This allows you to focus entirely on the adventure while exploring some of Morocco’s most remote landscapes.
What accommodation is included?
Accommodation throughout the expedition is a mixture of traditional Moroccan riads, a mountain gîte, fully supported mountain camps and a remote desert camp in the Sahara. This variety of accommodation is all part of the adventure, taking you from comfortable riads and traditional mountain lodging to camping in some of Morocco’s most remote and spectacular landscapes.
What is the food like on the expedition?
Our dedicated expedition cook accompanies the team throughout the trekking phase, preparing fresh meals each day. Meals are designed to keep you fuelled for long days on the trail and typically include traditional Moroccan dishes such as tagines, couscous, fresh bread, salads, fruit and snacks. Vegetarian, vegan and most dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice.
Can I join as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. Many of our clients join alone. Our small group sizes and shared adventure create a friendly atmosphere, and groups often finish the expedition as friends.
