MOUNT KILIMANJARO - LEMOSHO ROUTE
ABOUT THIS TRIP
This isn’t just a climb, it’s a carefully designed high-altitude expedition to the roof of Africa via one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and least crowded routes.
Our 11-day Lemosho Route ascent offers a gradual, well-paced approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, prioritising strong acclimatisation, time on the mountain, and a true expedition experience. Beginning on the remote western slopes, the route moves through dense rainforest, vast alpine plateaus, and high desert landscapes before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.
Unlike shorter itineraries, this expedition allows your body the time it needs to adapt. Carefully structured days follow the proven “climb high, sleep low” principle, increasing summit success while reducing unnecessary risk. Long days on the Shira Plateau, a key acclimatisation push to Lava Tower, and the dramatic traverse of Barranco Valley all play a critical role in the ascent.
Before stepping onto the mountain, we include a warm-up acclimatisation hike to Materuni Waterfall on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, easing you into altitude while offering insight into local Chagga life. From there, the expedition unfolds steadily, with fully supported mountain camping at all official camps and an experienced local crew managing logistics, safety, and camp operations.
Summit night is demanding but deliberate. You’ll climb under the stars toward Stella Point before the final push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. The descent carries you back through rapidly changing ecosystems: from alpine desert to rainforest, you will complete a full top-to-bottom traverse of the mountain.
This is Kilimanjaro done properly: unrushed, well supported, and grounded in real mountain experience. An expedition built for those who value preparation, authenticity, and the journey as much as the summit.
DIFFICULTY RATING
This expedition is graded Level 4 — Demanding, designed for those with good physical fitness and a resilient mindset. The Lemosho Route is widely considered one of the best ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a longer, more gradual ascent that allows for excellent acclimatisation.
While often regarded as slightly easier than the Machame Route due to its extended itinerary and steadier altitude gain, Lemosho is still a serious high-altitude expedition. The length of the route means more days on the mountain, sustained trekking at altitude, and physically demanding stages across varied and remote terrain.
Expect long but gradual climbing days through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert, eventually joining the southern circuit beneath Kilimanjaro’s towering glaciers. The route includes the ascent of the Barranco Wall, a hands-on but non-technical scramble and culminates in a long overnight summit push to Uhuru Peak in thin air.
Although the climb is non-technical, you must be prepared for cold temperatures, rapidly changing mountain weather, and the physical and mental demands of trekking for multiple consecutive days at altitude. The extended acclimatisation profile improves summit success rates, but endurance, determination, and a steady pace remain essential.
Our longer route design and experienced mountain team ensure you are well acclimatised, fully supported, and safe throughout the expedition.
